Facebook has now thrown the might of its lawyers at an Australian social site it claims is illegally making use of their site.
Following its recent $711 million landmark spam lawsuit win, Facebook has sent a Cease & Desist notice to Brisbane-based uSocial.net, a company who sells fans and friends on the social media site.
USocial CEO Leon Hill said the company had been dealing with Facebook regarding the matter. "We believe they want us to stop selling the service, however, we have no intention of doing so," Hill said.
"We are well within our legal right to do so and despite the C&D, we're not taking it down."
In the legal letter, Facebook claims uSocial is breaking several laws, including illegally accessing the site.
"Where there is a bit of a grey area is that there's as yet no legal precedent for a case like this so if it goes to court, we may be paving the way for new laws to come," he said.
This is the second notice uSocial has received from a social media site after receiving the same notice from Digg is 2008, which the company say they ignored.
"We're not too worried by this and we'll be ramping up our Facebook services in the coming weeks," said Hill. "We will shortly be launching another service with groups on Facebook, though we'll have to wait and see what the legal response is from that."
