Manufacturers and service providers are being invited to participate in The Sustainability Card, a green eftpos-style card to reward consumers for purchasing green products.
Cardholders will be rewarded with cash rebates when they buy selected products with proven sustainability credentials.
Sustainability Card holders will become a virtual community of environmentally conscious consumers purchasing environmentally sustainable products and services. Examples of rewards that cardholders could be eligible to claim include around $100 for a highly energy efficient fridge or dishwasher, approximately $250 for a solar hot water installation, $50 for switching to a 100 per cent GreenPower home electricity contract and around $25 for purchasing two cartons of organic wine.
With many selections across numerous product categories, it will streamline the process for consumers to claim financial benefits and spend them where eftpos facilities are available.
Cardholders do not earn points for purchases, and it will not operate as a discount card.
MD of The Sustainability Card, Michael Stovin-Bradford, said the membership card would be a commercial platform to reward businesses as well as consumers for making sustainable choices.
Benefits for participating brand owners include marketing to a sustainability aware audience and producer rebate promotions.
Expected to retail for around $7, The Sustainability Card will be available through retail outlets, from participating companies, online and through a number of other partner networks including non for profit organisations.
As well as the standard consumer card, there also will be staff reward and B2B versions of The Sustainability Card.
Ten per cent of card sale revenue will go into The Sustainability Card Innovation Fund, which will make grants to drive research and innovation in the areas of sustainable production, consumption and marketing.
The Sustainability Card is currently calling for initial expressions of interest for strategic brand partnering and product participation. First round responses close on November 30.
