Over 70,000 descend on Rundle Mall

Adelaide shoppers were out in force taking advantage of the city's Rundle Mall being open on Australia Day for the first time.
Over 70,000 shoppers flocked to the mall with an estimated $8 million in trade, the outdoor shopping precinct's chairman, Theo Maras says.
The expanded trading hours follows changes announced last year by the South Australian government allowing shops to trade on all public holidays except Good Friday and Christmas Day as part of an agreement between business and unions.
"Adelaide is alive and open and operating," Maras told AAP on Thursday.
With the fourth cricket Test against India underway drawing over 30,000 punters to Adelaide Oval, shoppers had voted with their wallets.
"It's absolutely what people wanted because the people were there in the thousands."
Dick Smith salesman Zak Cobe said business was brisk at the Rundle Mall electronics retailer.
"No one's at work so they might as well come out. Most people are in the city for the cricket," he told AAP.
SA Premier Jay Weatherill said expanding trading hours injected new life into the shopping precinct.
"Today were getting a glimpse of the vibrant city that is possible by allowing shop trading on public holidays," Weatherill said in a statement on Thursday.
Rundle Mall was open from 11 am to 5pm (CDT) on Thursday.
