Generation X spent more per person in the retail sector in 2012 than any other generation, according to analysis of debit and credit card transactions by National Australia Bank (NAB) and data analytics firm Quantium.
The analysis shows that Generation X spent an average $1133 every month at the shops in 2012 – 33 per cent more than the average Australian who spent close to $850.
Baby Boomers recorded an average retail spend of $1016 per month, while Generation Y spent slightly less than the average at $828.
Over the year to November 2012, the largest levels of spending per person were recorded among Generation X and Baby Boomers, with higher levels of income among these age groups likely to be a key factor in these results.
On a state by state basis, non-cash retail spending per person was highest in ACT and WA, while Victoria, SA and Tasmania spent the least per person over the year.
The research defined the generational groups as follows: Generation Z, people currently under 22 years of age; Generation Y, people currently aged between 22 and 32; Generation X, people currently aged between 32 and 52; Baby Boomers, people currently aged between 52 and 66.
The study analysed anonymous NAB customer credit card and debit card including Eftpos and Visa Debit transactions.

Being a Gen X myself, I think we spend alot of money on baby needs as we have a newborn. So not because we have high income but because we need to.
