After years of speculation and disproven rumours, UK high street fashion retailer Topshop has finally opened its first Australian store amid a flurry of models, cocktails, and clothing prices low enough to make competitors weep.
The 1300sqm store in Chapel Street’s Jam Factory offers personal shopping, styling, a much-hyped shoe bar, and encompasses the men’s diffusion brand, Topman, in the back quarter section of the rectangular space.
The Australian venture, to be managed by Next Athleisure (run by Hilton Seskin and former Westfield leasing manager David Slade), joins a league of 750 Topshop chain stores operated in 32 countries.
It also follows Spanish fast fashion chain, Zara, in April as the second significant high street retailer to enter the Australian market.
Topshop is hoping to obliterate locally with highly competitive, mass produced stock refreshed at least twice weekly – and importantly the product is not behind the UK season.
With mass crowds expected for its public launch today, Topshop is increasing the hype for its first day of trade with tactics like $100 gift vouchers for the first 10 customers through the store's doors.
Eyes are now already on Sydney for a store rumoured to open soon in the old Gowings building on the corner of George and Market street, which has access through QVB.
