Myer’s newest store is now trading at the Caneland Central Shopping Centre in Mackay, Queensland, ahead of an official opening by CEO Bernie Brookes and model Jennifer Hawkins on Saturday.

Thousands of Myer One members gained a special preview of the 10,000sqm, two-level store ahead of yesterday’s official opening of the centre.

Brookes said Myer Mackay is the only full-line department store in town and excitement has been building with almost 7000 people from the Mackay region joining the Myer One loyalty program in the lead up to the opening.

“We are delighted to bring the only full-line department store to one of Australia’s key growth regions,” Brookes said. “The new Myer store at Mackay incorporates a full range of merchandise and will provide an inspirational and exciting shopping environment for the local community. I am sure that the Mackay community will welcome Myer with the same enthusiasm as Queenslanders have embraced Myer for many years,” Brookes said.

Myer Mackay store manager Karen Dyki said there had been great excitement from the local community during the store development and she was confident that they would be delighted with the merchandise offering.

“The response from Mackay to our recruitment drive was fantastic with over 100 Mackay locals being chosen to join the Myer team,” Dyki said.

“Many of the brands that customers will find at Myer Mackay are only available at Myer. I think customers will be thrilled when they come in and find the latest products and services on offer and experience our customer service. Myer has a history of engagement and involvement at a community level – Myer Mackay will also be an active participant in local activities and events,” she said.

Mackay is located approximately 970km north of Brisbane on the east coast of Queensland. Historically, it was one of Australia's largest cane farming regions.

But more recently, the mining industry has become a key driver of the local economy with Mackay's growing tourism industry also benefiting from significant investment and planning.

The population of the Mackay store’s trading area has grown 4.2 per cent annually during the past few years. The new Myer store is part of the Lend Lease $230 million Caneland Central Shopping Centre redevelopment.
