Adventure retailer, Kathmandu, has appointed John Harvey as interim chairman following the death of its chairman, James Strong.

Harvey is expected to remain as interim chairman of the retail chain until Kathmandu's 2013 annual general meeting, by which time the board expects a permanent chairman to have been chosen.

In a statement, Harvey said the loss of strong would be felt throughout the business community in both Australia and New Zealand.

"I are very grateful to have had the benefit of his leadership,” he said.

Strong died on Sunday in Sydney, following lung complications after undergoing surgery. He was former CEO of Qantas, and also a former chairman of Woolworths.
