Harvey Norman opens GST-free website

Gerry Harvey, the staunchest critic of the government's $1000 GST-free threshold on good bought offshore from online stores, has decided if you cannot beat 'em, join 'em.

Just days before Christmas, Harvey has launched harveynormandirectimport.com, promising games for Xbox, Wii and Playstation at "the best global pricing" to the Australian gaming customers.

Harvey Norman says it will use its global operations to launch this direct imports concept, which will allow Australian customers to purchase games directly from Harvey Norman Ireland, GST free, and at the lowest prices currently available in Australia.

In a list of examples of the savings, high profile, high selling games will be sold at a cost usually between $12 and $25 less than Australian retail prices. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 for Xbox, for example, is selling for $63, $22 less than on rival websites, it says. However the site is charging shipping - $3.95 on one game, reducing that saving.

Harvey Norman’s European suppliers have provided Harvey Norman Direct Imports with hundreds of game titles on line, which are available for immediate shipping.

“In general, harveynormandirectimports will allow customers to purchase new games at prices lower than those paid for second hand games. The market in Australia is demanding global pricing, which are significantly lower – Harvey Norman is delivering”, said Gerry Harvey, executive chairman of the company bearing his name.

“Harvey Norman has listened to our customers. We are now in a position to deliver a unique opportunity for our customers to make significant savings on the latest in gaming.

"The gaming customer in Australia has been paying too much for years and we look forward to providing our customers with a new cost effective offering”, said Ben McIntosh, GM, Harvey Norman Computers and Communications.

The move is expected to strain relations with local game distributors.

Harvey Norman is an international company!! Gerry will do what every other retailer has the ability to do under this proposterous Low Value Threshold (LVT) system.
Aussie Businesses will funnel revenues and profits out of ATO clutches and into foreign tax effective vehicles and structures like never before. No more Payroll tax, no more Workers comp, no more Superannuation Guarantee, no more Fringe Benefits Tax, and no more ludicrous Fair Work Australia wages and restrictive workplace practises.
This is the beginning of a cancer that could rot the ATO revenues in ways they have not even begun to imagine!
Surely the government is not that stupid......??? Then again.....??

Well if you "can't beat em join em" they say. Hey he's not the only business trying to compete with the overseas online market. And yeah JO why does he seem to get all of the TV advertising free of charge every time he does soemthing new. We're a small business and our website has been around longer than Gerry Harvey's and we get "found" by bloody hard work and watching our google rankings. Just stop worrying about what everyone else can do better GH and concentrate on your foot traffic and service a little more. That should keep everyone happy... us Aussies included.

This is the first smart thing Gerry Harvey has done in a while. It is also the only way Australian retailers can compete - by selling at global prices. Our government doesn't want to address the problem - it's time someone did.

Tall poppy syndrome (TPS) is a pejorative term primarily used in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other Anglosphere nations to describe a social phenomenon in which people of genuine merit are resented, attacked, cut down, or criticised because their talents or achievements elevate them above or distinguish them from their peers. You people need to get over this "thing" you have about Gerry Harvey. I whinge, you whinge, he whinges get over it. He's a successful businessmen playing on an unfair playing field, not with other Australian retailers but with overseas retailers selling into our market. He makes a valid complaint and is told to get over it, so he does, he opens his new Irish online retail store and he's still chastised for it for killing other shops. He could be Mother Theresa and he's still cop criticism for something. The guys worked hard all his life and deserves the spoils he now has.

New heading: "HARVEY NORMAN STILL IGNORANT TO SHOPPING TRENDS". He still believes the difference is only the 10% GST on purchases. If he can sell to consumers this way, then his prices in the stores should only be 10% more than global prices, consumers would still buy, as the 10% extra "in store" would often be appealing when no delivery costs. He is fixated with this GST issue, and is blind to the big picture!

The life of an Octopus. The tentacles reach out when you least expect it.Still water can run deep so don't expect anything but scathing attacks on any element of business Gerry can have a go at. 6 years ago GH was putting all the small audio-visual retailers out of business without a care in the world. He dealt to Compaq and returned millions of dollars worth of stock turning their business in Australia upside down overnight. He has killed off more small businesses than almost any other retailer. The staff he replaces all this with are shlemiels who have no product knowledge and are not trained. If you do in-store training next time you call around they are gone and someone new has replaced them. In all a pointless time wasting exercise. Why even bother training people? Just use monkeys Gerry. They are probably cheaper anyway.
There is little that is innovative or creative about what he is doing simply trying to prove a point how annoyed he is that online international retailers can beat him at his game.
They will go on doing this far into the future.
Keep peddling its going to get a lot harder. Already international retailers are poised to move.
You have well and truly stitched Australians with your Franchisee and Proprietor business model. Cash in while you can. You have enough real estate to just about sink the Australian market. How many more category killer developments can you own? 3% of everything not enough for you? Go on tell us how its hard times? Bah Humbug. Plenty people gearing up for a cold Xmas this year and some of them you have well and truly rationalised. Classic GH. Keep it coming especially those dingbat TV ads you have run for years. They are so old you can almost smell the moth balls on them

Gerry Harvey makes out he is a voice for battling small businessmen which is far from true. He has no problem doing things that are detrimental to other small businesses and this online venture is just the latest. I am heartily sick of seeing him mouthing off on various current affairs programmes which are in effect just free advertising for his business.

I wonder if someone can enlighten me on how this ventures is shared/impacted viz.a vis the existing Franchisors? ( serious question - not a comment.)

Retailers get blamed for high prices and then when a retailer retaliates Robert complains also!

This is a positive move in an unfair global market. Other retailers will be doing this to compete and the public should be happy. The government has not seen that this is what they are driving retailers to do. It will mean lower local employment, higher imports and less GST revenue!

The persistant publication of Gerry Harvey's ramblings & publicity of his businesses is becoming more tedious than his radio adverts.

Robert you are a sad character. HN employs thousands of people and all retailers are operating in an unfair environment regarding gst. Get that chip off your shoulder

Gerryatric Gerry.
Money grabbing sook.
He has made his billions off the Australian public, and is now dropping his bottom lip.
The love of money is the root of all evil.
He is one of the people who can never have enough thousands of millions of dollars.
