In Europe and North America, it’s common to see shoppers taking their dogs shopping.
But grocery stores are among the few retailers who frown at the arrival of leashed pets, purely for health and safety reasons.
So in Norway, an innovative ‘pet locker’ has made its debut providing a safe and secure drop off for dogs and a nominal fee.
Trend spotting website Springwise.com reports a huge number of pets go missing each year after slipping their leash while tied up outside a store or lost to criminal ‘dogknappers’.
The pet “lockers” - spied outside a grocery store in Norway’s capital Oslo - offer dog owners a way to keep their canine companions safe and dry while they get their shopping done without an inappropriate tour of the grocery store.
The pet locker, pictured, was spotted by Swedish designer Henrick Eriksson. Called the Hundehiet (which translates roughly from Norwegian as “dog burrow”) it gives consumers a safe, lockable place in which to keep their dog while they shop. Pricing, according to Eriksson, is NOK 10, or A$1.60.
“How the Hundehiet units are kept clean and disease-free isn’t entirely clear, and a search for other details about the shelters — including who operates them or how they’re kept cool in summertime, for example — was fruitless,” reports Springwise.com.
“Nonetheless, it’s an intriguing premise, particularly as pet theft becomes an increasingly common problem.”
