Long suffering David Jones staff and customers are finally about to get a state of the art point of sale system for handling customer payments.

David Jones has partnered with UK based PCMS to deliver its new POS system, which will be similar to those used by Marks & Spencer and John Lewis.

Its cost has not been disclosed but CEO Paul Zahra says it will be within the $80 million annual capital expenditure budget.

The new system will be piloted from the middle of next calendar 2012 before being roled out across the store network.

"We are very excited about the implementation of our new POS system,” Zagra said in a statement to the ASX.

“Some of the improved service features and enhancements that our new POS system will deliver include:
  • Faster transaction processing time as there are 50 per cent fewer key strokes on standard transactions.
  • Barcoded register receipts to speed up refunds.
  • Introduction of gift receipts to help our customers.
  • Predictive cash tender to make cash transactions quicker.
  • More efficient management of POS markdowns.
  • Touch screen technology.
  • Less paper through the removal of dockets.
  • Energy efficient hardware which provides a 30 per cent reduction in power consumption.
  • 'Tap & go' eftpos transactions.
"Our new POS system will also enable us to access inventory information and to provide multi-channel capability," said Zahra.

$80Mil seems a bit insane! I'm sure our company could do the system for half that price, and a lot better too! haha
I'm sure It's not all of that budget, but even if it is half that, I'm sure a lot of it is a case of "They'll pay so we'll bill" rather than actual genuine cost.

PCMS partners with Transacta, a division of wholly owned Australian company Object Consulting, to deliver its world class retail solutions in Australia, NZ and South East Asia. Transacta is closely involved with the David Jones project. Software is an international commodity and retailers in Australia use POS solutions from all corners of the globe - especially large retailers. For example, one of DJ’s closest competitors uses software that originated in Canada but was delivered though a leading German solutions company. Transacta has implemented PCMS based solutions for a range of local businesses since they become PCMS’ partner in the region in 1998. This has generated employment, skills development and wealth in Australia.

Hey Michelle. Parents rooms are for others than only 'mums'.

Unless the real benefits have not been mentioned, there is absolutely nothing ground breaking about the commonly available POS functionality described and no compelling reason to have sourced this from outside of Australia. It's quite understandable when products not produced in in this country are brought in for commercial use but this is certainly not the case for enterprise wide solutions for large retailers. I also feel less inclined to support DJ's because of their decision to not invest in local product or development.

it's a shame that DJ would not decide to invest in an Australian developed POS system. I for one will no longer be supporting them!

Zahra means the cost will fall within the company's overall $80m per annum capital expenditure budget - in other words no extra budget is necessary.

Wow, about time. I was just in DJs last week and laughing with the sales assistant about how antiquated the tills seemed!

Now DJs - how about doing something with the parent's rooms? Mums will stay and spend in your store (NOT the competitor's) if you provide a state of the art parent's room. Otherwise they simply leave the store and take their dollars with them!
