Aussie pies hit Broadway

Australia's Pie face has opened the doors of its first US store on famous Broadway.

And during the first week's trading, the company says, "New Yorkers have taken to the Aussie pie like flies to a barbecue".

The store opened on Australia Day on a corner site beneath the David Letterman theatre.

Pie Face says the store has struggled to keep up with demand ever since.

"Each day, thousands of New Yorkers queue up for a taste of the humble Australian meat pie, and sales have blown apart every budget set by the Pie Face team," says co-founder, Wayne Homschek.

"Never in our wildest dreams did we think that we would run out of pies on the first day, it’s been amazing”.

Adds his partner, Betty Fong: “We are already looking at other locations around New York and hope to open another store by mid 2012”.

Pie Face plans to take Australia’s iconic pie, complete with the brand’s signature “face” which denotes its flavour, on a global journey, and New York is the all-important first step. Since the company was founded in 2003 by Wayne Homschek and Betty Fong (originally fashion designers with the label Paablo Nevada), Pie Face has established 70 stores in Australia.

Fantastic branding executed well at a very good site. Along with a quality product and high service standards really seems to delight customers. Retailing 101 still works.
