If you’ve ever thought of introducing fitness and health products into your store or have been wondering where the consumer trends in this market are heading - now could be the right time to seriously consider the opportunities.

According to the organisers of the Australian Fitness & Health Expo which will hit Sydney in April, the industry is in the strongest position it has been in for many years, with a high level of support from community groups and even the entertainment sector.

“Shows like The Biggest Loser and MasterChef, which is encouraging people to cook at home, are helping to educate people about exercise and diet,” said exhibition director Jon Perry.

“Community groups are also turning the volume up on their fitness messaging in response to Australia’s continuing fight with obesity and Sedentary Death Syndrome.”

“You only have to look at the Australian Medical Association’s recent call for sickening ‘shock and awe’ ads to be used to fight obesity to see that the issue is escalating.

“In response, the industry is set to grow, providing numerous new services and products.”

Perry said the next few months will see more fun fitness options hit the market that help people forget they’re exercising and also holistic combo solutions that provide consumers with physical and nutritional help.

Other trends include:

* Cable-free, high tech options that make fitness easier are also on the rise – like  weight scales that wirelessly connect to your iPhone and allow you to graph your weightloss progress.

* Green fitness products – like biodegradable, recyclable yoga mats.

* Outdoor options that get people out of the gym and into the natural environment.

* With the continuing rise of obesity on children, fitness solutions that the kids of today will actually enjoy are moving into the spotlight.

* Options for seniors - we are all living longer with the 90s becoming the new 70s. Solutions for this age group will continue to attract more attention.

For those considering the fitness industry as a business opportunity, the Expo will feature a dedicated business advice section. This will include information about training, marketing, technology and suppliers relevant to establishing and growing a business in the industry.

The Expo will also provide retailers with an opportunity to see some of the latest new trends and products emerging in the industry.

The Australian Fitness & Health Expo is open only to those working in the fitness/health industry on Friday April 15, with general and trade admission on Saturday April 16 and Sunday April 17. The Expo is open from 10am – 6pm on Friday and 9.30am – 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Entry for trade is free via pre-registration online while general public can register online for a discount.
